The House on Clydesdale Lane :: English Literature Essays

The House on Clydesdale Lane The small townhouse always had the inviting fragrance of freshly cut flowers in the morning and the delicious aroma of my mother's secret recipes in the early evening. Anyone who entered was immediately greeted by the fragrances and found themselves staying a little longer than they planned. The delicate light from my grandmother's antique lamp beckoned sleep and the faded striped cushions on the worn living room couch held many a drowsy head in those days. The inside of the house consisted of rooms that were small and barely separated so that you always knew what was going on in the next room. From the living room, you could see my mother giggling at one of my father's corny jokes as they prepared supper together. In the living room, my older brother was most likely teasing my sister and me and tickling us until we screamed. We played games of "go-fish" and Chinese checkers as we waited for supper to be ready. We always ate dinner together in the dining room that barely separated the kitchen from the living room. The dinner table was a small wooden square that had wobbly legs and shook when one of us laughed. Sometimes trivial arguments took place when my brother would hurl mashed potatoes from his spoon at my sister or me. After dinner, my sister and I raced to see who could make it up the stairs first to put our pajamas on for bed. My dad read stories to us and often told us stories from when he was a boy. It was a warm house. It was warm even in the icy winter months when the heat was turned off at night to save money. My younger sister and I snuggled together in the bed we shared and used our hairbrushes as microphones as we lip-synched the songs on our tiny radio. Sometimes during those nights we played "Candyland' when we were supposed to be asleep—until we were caught. The outside of our house looked much like the rest of the houses in the neighborhood. The peeling green paint flaked off into the small patch of dirt my mother used as a flower garden. The sidewalk was gray and covered with brown hopscotch patterns from the tree bark we used as chalk. The front door had an outside door that had a torn and tattered screen that hung down lifelessly.

My Future Plan Essay

I knew for a while that I wanted to be a police officer, but after taking the Career Cruising test my thought was finalized. While I was taking the online test I was hoping that police officer was going to be an option I was right, my choice was actually high on the list. The hard part was deciding on what college was right for me because I didn’t know where to start. Now that I have an initial research project on my career and college choices, I have learned that being a police officer is a good choice for me and Point Park University and California University of Pennsylvania are two very ideal schools for me to go too. My future goal is to be in law enforcement, and one day maybe even is a K-9 cop. I think this is a great job choice for me because I love to help people and I hate when innocent people get hurt. Also because I love being physically active and working outdoors, I would hate to have a job that you have to work at a desk all day five days a week. The most surprising thing I learned about this job is the pay, officers only make around $54,000 a year and I feel like that is not a lot of money for the job they actually do. Police officers face very dangerous situations every day and go places not knowing what’s going to happen. I also learned that too be a decent cop you have to understand people’s reactions and understand why people do the things they do. After reading about law enforcement I was surprised but after thinking about it, it does make sense and the better you are at understanding people, the better you will be in your job. Read more: My future plans essay After taking the test about what college is best for me, my top two choices is Point Park University and California University of Pennsylvania. Point Park is a good choice for me because it is close to home, but there are things to do around campus so I won’t get bored. I also like Point Park because it is a smaller college so my class size will be small; one consideration is I may want to experience living further away. My second choice is University and California University or CalU; I like CalU because it’s in-state but far to live away from home, also because the school is kind of small but not too small. Out of my two choices I am leaning towards CalU. I also like CalU because the tuition isn’t too expensive and the campus is very nice. I think that my current academic performance is good for me to get into college. I just have to make sure that I keep my grades up and I don’t let them slip. Outside of school I just need to make sure I stay out of trouble and in shape. I could also talk to some about being a cop. I could ask for some advice about college and how an office copes with everything they go through. This project has really helped me narrow down my options on where I wanted to go to school. It helped me realize that being a police officer is a good choice for me and it gave me confidence about where I was going with my future. It also helped me set goals about what I needed to do to make my goals a reality.

Lincon vs Kennedy essays

Lincon vs Kennedy essays Many people share similar aspects throughout their lives, but could two significantly relevant people shared such common lives that might even seem eerie. Abraham Lincon and John F. Kennedy were both assassinated. However, apparently there is more to connect them than that. A little part of US history makes you wonder if it is mere coincidence, or maybe planned? Where it all began, Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Whereas Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860; John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. During their political lives in Washington, D.C., Lincon and Kennedy and their wives lost their children while living in the White House. Seemingly, both Presidents were shot on a Friday, in the head. A very unbelievable fact was that Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy, and Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln! Both were assassinated by Southerners, and were succeeded by Southerners with leaders named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. Another very significant aspect between Lincon and Kennedy was their assassination. John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their three names. Both names are comprised of fifteen letters. (Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.) However, Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials. The life of Abraham Lincon was different from that of John F. Kennedy, or was it? Although two significantly distinct figures in American History lived during two completely different centuries, eventually many facts were brought about that almost were exact. ...

Cover Letter Tips for Receptionists

Cover Letter Tips for Receptionists The job search experts at Best-Job-Interview.com have developed this cover letter template for receptionists looking for their next opportunity. My annotations are italicized after each paragraph- feel free to update and adapt to your experiences or reword to reflect your own voice! The more personalized your letter is for its intended recipient, the better.Your Name   Your Address   Your Contact details (phone and email)  Even if youre submitting online, if youre given the opportunity to upload a document, format it like you would a letter. If youre using an email to send your cover letter, include your name and contact information in your email signature instead.DateMs Mary Stevens   Hiring Manager   ABC Company   15 South Parkway   Long Island, NY 11551  Again, an online submission process can throw a wrench in here, but if there are any contact details for the HR department online, call in and just ask the receptionist who will be reviewing the materials so you ca n personalize your letter. It looks much better than just To whom it may concern and shows youre willing to take initiative and go above and beyond, before youve even landed the interview.Dear Ms. Stevens:Err on the side of Ms over Miss or Mrs. If the gender of a name is ambiguous, the safest option is to use the full name, i.e. Dear Alex StevensYour job posting for a receptionist at ABC company caught my attention immediately as my skills and experience are a close match to your requirements for this position. Im a longtime fan of ABCs work with companies like Generics Inc. Thank you for your consideration of my application and the enclosed resume.   Notice the specificity of the opening paragraph- Jane names the company and indicates she has some knowledge of its work. If shed encountered the post on a specific job site, or even better, received a word-of-mouth referral, she could have mentioned that here as well. Dont try to fake it- actually research any company youre applying to, and try to find some positive mention of them in the news to enrich your letter.I have three years work experience as a receptionist in a large organization where I was responsible for handling all calls and visitors in addition to providing extensive organizational and administrative support. I am a self-directed and independent worker who has taken the initiative to learn as much as possible about the company I work for in order to become a valuable information resource.  Obviously this is a generic version of a skill summary- you would want to name your previous employer and possibly mention a specific example of something youd learned about or a project you initiated. Whats noteworthy is that its not just a repetition of a resume bullet point, but a broader summary.Organizational and planning skills are among my particular strengths. I have developed a number of processes to manage my varied responsibilities tasks and make sure I meet the demands of a fast-paced work envi ronment. I utilize technology to assist me wherever possible and have a good working knowledge of a number of computer applications including MS Office.   This is fairly vague also- an experienced receptionist should be able to refer to specific processes or scheduling and project management programs. If this crossed my consultant desk, I would suggest Jane use more positive language like Im comfortable with content management systems and learning proprietary software on the job.My strong communication skills and outgoing, energetic personality ensure that I provide first-rate customer service to both clients and colleagues. I thoroughly enjoy dealing with a wide variety of people and take pride in being the face of an organization or the first point of contact over the phone. This is where a close reading of the job description comes in handy- highlight aspects of your personality, as Jane does, that will conform to the demands of the job. I like that Jane mentions both outside cl ients and her colleagues, since a good receptionist has to be able to get along with everybody.ABC Company enjoys an excellent reputation and I am confident that I would be an asset to your company. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my abilities in more depth and am available for an interview at your earliest convenience. Please contact me via phone or email to arrange a convenient time for us to meet. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope to speak with you soon.End with a note about the company youre applying to, and indicate your availability for an interview. Make sure it doesnt sound like a demand or a hostage negotiation, but is breezy and polite!Sincerely,Jane JobseekerAug 10, Job-Winning Receptionist Cover LetterRead More at Best-job-interview
